Judy McElroy: Artist of the Month (Dec. - Jan.)

CHEYENNE COUNTY ART GUILD SELECTS J. I. MC ELROY AS ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Born and raised on Nebraska cattle ranches, J. I. McElroy has a great love and respect for nature, wide-open spaces, and the natural interplay between the land & its inhabitants.  These are depicted almost exclusively in her artwork, which is accomplished in a realistic style.

What makes her paint or draw a particular subject can vary.  Sometimes she is so awed with a scene or its colors that she tries to preserve it on paper or canvas and share that scene with anyone who might have missed it!  Other times she is so delighted with all the lights and darks, smooth and rough textures, and so forth, that she is compelled to see if her eyes can see it all and if her hands can record it.  "Sometimes," McElroy said, "I simply try to pass on the humor, wholesomeness, and wonder of people, animals, and events that I am encountering on life’s highways.  What a joy!"

Another joyful experience to her through art is being a member of the Cheyenne Co. Art Guild, the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, the Ogallala Art Society, and the American Plains Artists.  She said that she is thankful for the many friendships and learning opportunities that she is enjoying through her association with these great organizations, the people in them, and through art in general.

McElroy's favorite medias are watercolor, acrylic, and graphite pencil & charcoal.  "Usually the scene I see, the humidity in the air or lack thereof, the sun’s position in the sky, or the mood of the scene will tell me which media I want to use to try to take that real-life scene and put it down on a two-dimensional surface," she said.  Sometimes after working with color for quite a while she thinks it is just a wonderful vacation as well as a challenge to work in black and white again with graphite pencils and charcoal.  She likes the challenges presented by each media.

Challenges are one of the many things she likes about art.  For McElroy the first challenge presented is being brave enough to put that first stroke of pencil or paint onto the new blank sheet of paper or canvas.  The next major challenge is to keep going with a painting or drawing when she hits a halfway point in its progress where things are developing, but still not very pretty—when she wonders whether to keep painting or throw it away and start over.  And the final challenge for her is to know when the painting is done--when that final little touch-up is the last one the painting needs.  The whole process is a challenge to her, and yet one she considers to be so educational and so much fun while seeing how the artwork develops.  "If in the end I like it, then that is good," McElroy stated, "and if someone else likes the artwork and it gives him or her pleasure to look at it, then that is extra special!

Her artwork and/or prints or cards may be seen at Sidney Feed, Sidney; soon at Art at Lodgepole Creek; Price Gallery & Framing, Valentine, NE; her studio-gallery, The Bunkhouse, southeast of Gurley; and in public and private collections internationally.  Upcoming shows and exhibits in 2015 include the CCAG Spring Art Show in March, Sidney; Ogallala Art Society Show in April at the Meadowlark Gallery in Grant, NE and at the Petrified Wood Gallery in September in Ogallala; the American Plains Artists 30th Annual Juried Show, August-October, at the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, NE; a Featured Artist Show at the Most Unlikely Place in Lewellen in October; and the 2Shot Goose Hunt Art Show in December in Torrington, WY.

McElroy's artwork has won many awards at various times including Best of Show and People’s Choice at the Cheyenne County Art Guild’s Spring Show; the Third Place Award, Award of Excellence, and the Purchase Award at the international American Plains Artists Juried Exhibit & Sale in Midland, TX and Lincoln, NE; many First, Second, and Third Place awards at the Holyoke Art Show, Cheyenne County Fair, Wray Art Show and Yuma, Colorado Art Show, and several others.  The best award to her is when someone likes and connects with her artwork!

A signed and numbered 15" x 30" print of "Camouflaged but Uneasy" (a herd of ten pronghorns) will be on display at the Sidney Public Library through January 11, 2015.  Twelve other artworks by J. I. McElroy will be on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view these fine artworks.

Patsy Yager - November Artist of the Month

Patsy Yager is a Head Start teacher with a MAED degree (Master of Arts in Elementary Education).  While she has had very little formal training in art, she has always had a love of art and a desire to create art.  In 1998 Yager took a few oil painting lessons from Trish Corder at the Hardy, Arkansas, Spring River Art Gallery.  From these she learned a few of the basics of painting with oils. After moving to Sidney, Nebraska, she enrolled at WNCC for some early childhood classes.  As an elective she took beginning drawing.  In 2013 Yager joined the Cheyenne County Art Guild and has had the pleasure of attending a few art workshops sponsored by the guild.  Recently she began taking painting classes with Mark Leach, a Bob Ross certified instructor.  Yager stated, "I find the different styles of art fascinating."  And after attending a watercolor workshop sponsored by the CCAG she is looking forward to trying her hand with watercolors.
Yaker's favorite subject matter is landscapes.  She also likes to paint animals, pets, and family members.  Her "Spring River" painting is on display now through December 14th at the Sidney Public Library.  Other paintings and photography by Patsy Yager are on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view this first ever exhibit of Yager's very fine artworks!

OCTOBER ARTIST OF THE MONTH: NANCY DEE

Nancy L. Biesemeier Dee is a fourth generation resident of the rural plains of Northeastern Colorado.  As a lifelong painter, she especially remembers two elementary teachers that encouraged her interest in art.  After receiving her college degree in Business Education and a masters in Computer Education, Dee continued to pursue her art interests while teaching and raising three sons.  For many years, she painted when her schedule allowed and was able to study under several nationally-known watercolorists.  Over the years she has won several local art awards for her watercolor paintings and developed a strong interest in pastel painting.

One of her watercolor paintings won an Award of Excellence at the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) conference in June and is currently in the ANAC Traveling Show which is comprised of the top twenty-six artworks from that conference.  Later in the summer one of her pastel paintings received a 2nd Place Award in the 10th Annual Mile High International Pastel Exhibition that was held at the Denver Public Library in Denver, CO.  Her artwork was also chosen by the Denver Public Library's graphic designer to be one of four displayed on the "poster" for the event.

Strong parts of Dee's award winning paintings are color relationships and rural subjects.  She loves to capture things in the rich saturated colors and vibrant light of Northeast Colorado where she and her husband live on their farm south of Paoli.  In addition to painting and supporting the local arts, she shares her love of watercolor and pastel through teaching.  Remembering how she started in college when she attended a local artist's workshop in watercolor painting and got "hooked" on painting, Dee enjoys sharing her knowledge.
Dee is a member of the Cheyenne County, Ogallala, Wray and Yuma art guilds, as well as the Colorado Watercolor Society, Pastel Society of Colorado, and the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs.

Nancy Dee's award-winning watercolor painting titled "Yavatai Yucca" has been on display at the Sidney Public Library and twelve other artworks at the Cheyenne County Community Center since October 13th.  The public is encouraged to view these fine artworks.  Other artworks of Dee's can be viewed at  www.frenchmancreek.com.

Message from CCAG President, Cindi Egging:

GREETINGS to all current CCAG members!  I am pleased to serve as your president for the 20`14-2015 year.  I want to send out the agenda through email before every meeting so that items can be added prior to the meeting and maybe save some time during our business meeting.  I will also try to send them out early enough that I can also contact those who do not have email, too!  THANKS to Ron Nordyke (vice president), Judy McElroy (secretary), Margie Surber (treasurer) for filling out the Officers' terms for this year.

OF NOTE:  We will again be having our MINI-WORKSHOPS, taught by members of the club.  Anyone is invited to attend and learn new techniques in many different mediums.  Invite friends and co-workers, neighbors and family members!!  The building will be open by 4:30 for those of you who want to come early and draw or paint for awhile with a group.  The workshop will begin at 5:15 so that if you work you will have time to come and join us.  The workshops are casual and go until 6:30ish, so please come as soon as you are able.  These little workshops were planned last year in hopes that most people would come and the meetings could get out earlier, but since everyone can't come, we have decided to add a short PROGRAM by the same artist, corresponding to the workshop theme, after the business meeting.

OCTOBER Mini-workshop:  Drawing by Judy McElroy at 4:30 in the Shelter House at Legion Park.  Judy will be giving instruction about drawing what you see suited to the beginner or the seasoned artist.  Bring any pencils you have, as well as erasers, sketch book, etc...

Fun Facts from the Art Archives

42 YEARS AGO:  Art Guild started on September 26, 1972.  The first president was Jan Pippitt, Vice-President was Dr. Paul Adkinson, Secretary was Milly Elwell, and treasurer was Carolyn Schmidt.  The second meeting was at the 4-H building on Oct. 4, 1972.  The program for that meeting was given by Curtis Routh on acrylics.

CCAG September Artist of the Month: Ethan Nelson

Ethan Nelson, a senior in high school who is attending dual credit classes at Western Nebraska Community College, is the Cheyenne County Art Guild "Artist of the Month" for September.

Nelson began his career of drawing and painting at an early age. One of his earliest artistic accomplishments is the Nebraska Fence Post Christmas Art Contest in 2002 where, at age 5, he won his first award.
Nelson joined the Cheyenne County Art Guild at age 10 in 2007 with the thought of improving his art techniques and learning about the business of marketing visual art. That same year, he and his older brother, Jake, founded their own business and launched Nelsonart, which specializes in original art notecards and limited edition prints. In 2012, Nelson signed his first book contract to illustrate "Bless Your Hearts, The North Platte Canteen" by author and historian, Charlotte Endorf.
Nelson's most recent art awards for 2013-2014 include: Cheyenne County Art Guild Best of Show, Association of Nebraska Art Clubs Certificate of Excellence, Image Art Show Best of Show – youth division, Hixson-Lied Young Artist Award, Cheyenne County Fair Grand Champion and the Congressional Art Contest, second place with artwork on display in Congressman Adrian Smith's Washington office. Nelson also has had artwork accepted for the Western Nebraska Community College 2014 "Emerging Voices" publication.

His artwork is on display this month at the Cheyenne County Rec Center and the Sidney Public Library.

Ethan Nelson: Sidney Sun Telegraph Article

The following article, written by Dawn Graves, appeared in the Sidney Sun Telegraph on Sept 5, 2014

Ethan Nelson: Not your average kid
Dalton teen honored with congressional award

Dawn Graves

Ethan Nelson, a 17-year-old Dalton resident, has accomplished much to be proud of.
As an entrepreneur, an accomplished artist, a published illustrator and recipient of multiple awards for various accomplishments, one might presume that Nelson was snobbish and egotistical.
In fact, he's a humble, soft-spoken young man, grateful for the opportunities in life.
Home-schooled by his mother, Ellen, since the eighth grade, Ethan is now a high school senior. He gives a lot of credit to his parents for their support.
"They definitely encouraged me to do things," he said, "do things beyond my comfort zone."
Nelson has more than just a high school education under his belt, having attended WNCC in Scottsbluff and Sidney. His grades earned him a place on the Dean's List last year, as well as a spot on the President's List this year for his 4.0 grade-point average.
His efforts qualified him to be a Questbridge College Prep Scholar.
He considers his time at WNCC to have been very beneficial, especially as it prepared him for the summer classes he just completed at Harvard.
Yes, Harvard – the ivy-league university in Cambridge, Mass.
"WNCC is a really great – almost under-appreciated – college, because it's just so influential in the Panhandle," he said. "So many careers come out of there.
"All the professors there are just really motivated and really want to help the students out and get them jobs, get them internships," Nelson said. "It's just a really great place to go to college."
WNCC is also the college through which Nelson applied for and was awarded $1,500 by NASA to build robots.
Nelson's college experience has provided him with other opportunities he may not have had otherwise.
In flash animation class at WNCC, Nelson built an app – a game he named "Tower Defense." Later, he read about an app contest in the newspaper – the House Student App Challenge for Nebraska's Third Congressional District.
According to Congressman Adrian Smith's press release, the nationwide competition is "designed to promote innovation and engagement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among high school students."
"I submitted my little game," Nelson said, "and turned out I got first place."
Nelson's app is featured on the U.S. House of Representatives' website, and will be displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. Nelson was recognized by Smith for his accomplishment.
This was not the first time Nelson was recognized by the congressman.
Earlier this year, Nelson was awarded both the Congressional Award Bronze Medal and won second place in the 2014 Third District Congressional Art Competition.
Winning the Congressional Award for Youth Initiative, Service and Achievement is no easy task.
A participant sets goals in four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration, and dedicates a certain amount of hours to each activity to progress through different levels. To achieve bronze medal status, for example, Nelson had to complete at least 100 hours of voluntary public service over the course of seven months. Each activity requires the completion of a specific number of hours.
Nelson was able to meet with Smith at his Scottsbluff office to receive his medal.
"That was really exciting, to meet him and get the award," he said. "I was kind of nervous, too."
Another meeting with Smith occurred after Nelson won second place in the Congressional Art contest for his photograph entitled "Aviator," which is a multiple-exposure composition of a pilot's silhouette overlaid with an image of sunlit clouds.
"My mom saw the Congressional Art Contest online, so I submitted this one," Nelson said, pointing to the framed photograph. "I had taken it, I think, a few years earlier. And it turns out that Mr. Smith really likes flying."
The piece now hangs in Smith's office in Washington, D.C.
That contest is just one of many occasions when Nelson has won awards for his art. Other recent awards include Cheyenne County Art Guild Best of Show, the Hixson-Lied Award for Young Artists and Best of Show Youth Division at the Image Art Show.
To top it all off, Nelson has just been chosen as the Cheyenne County Art Guild's Artist of the Month for September.
It appears that Nelson could be accepted at his choice of any college after high school, but he hasn't quite made up his mind.
"I'm not completely sure yet," he said, "but I do have a few colleges picked that I'm looking at."
His choice in a college depends on a couple factors.
He would consider a school that is, he says, "well-rounded and has a lot of different programs, a lot of different types of students," as opposed to a college that only specializes in one discipline. He wants to be able to change his mind, if necessary.
Outside of academic pursuits, Nelson is deeply involved in 4-H. He believes it has brought him many opportunities to explore different vocational and avocational pursuits he may not otherwise have had access to.
"I can't really say enough how 4-H had really prepared me," he said. "It's just such a great program."
One of the benefits of Nelson's involvement with 4-H is the confidence and skills he gained to start his own business, Nelsonart, with his older brother Jake. Nelson markets and sells notecards and prints of their art, and has sometimes used the venture as a fundraiser for worthy recipients, such as the Sidney Public Library.
His notecards caught the attention of Charlotte Endorf, a Nebraska author who happened to be doing a presentation at the library. She asked if Nelson would illustrate her book, "Bless Your Hearts: The North Platte Canteen." About 20 of his illustrations were published in the book.
Nelson promotes entrepreneurship, speaking and presenting to kids at events such as Career Day at WNCC.
"I'll prepare a little presentation and just tell these kids how they can start a business, or get into the business that they want to be in," he said "Like, how to start out, how to get advice, how to promote your business."
An entrepreneur, an accomplished artist, a published illustrator and a recipient of multiple awards for various accomplishments – Nelson can claim all these, and more. But he wants kids to know that these opportunities are available to almost anyone.
"It's just to show that you can, through these programs, you can go pretty much anywhere that you want, or any career that you want," he said. "You're not just confined to a few careers or this region."
While Nelson isn't sure yet what he will end up doing in life, or exactly which career he will pursue, he does know that he wants to benefit others through it.
"I definitely want to be making a difference and helping people," he said.

September Meeting of the CCAG

The  2014-2015 CCAG year was kicked off with a carry in supper meeting enjoyed at the Sidney Legion Park shelter house.   First order of business included the election of officers.

President:  Cindi Egging
Vice-President:  Ron Nordyke;
Secretary:  Judy McElroy
Treasurer:  Margie Surber.

Following is a brief synopsis of the meeting as submitted by Judy McElroy, CCAG secretary

Cindi explained the mini-workshops before the meetings and the after-the-meeting programs for the year.  The CCAG will be making a scarecrow for the Oktoberfest Scarecrow Competition.

Various art workshops were discussed:
  • Nancy Dee's upcoming pastel workshop (Oct.3-5th) at the Eagle Canyon Hideaway at Lake McConaughy (for more info. go to www.eagle-canyon.com or call Patti Bohall at 970-630-3517as there may still be openings)
  • Halsey Autumn Art Workshops (contact Tish for more info),
  • Possible watercolor/acrylic workshop by Patsy Smith,
  • Golden Acrylic & Watercolor workshop by Mary Morrison,
  • plein aire workshop by Ben Darling, and another possible workshop by an area artist
Cindi discussed a possible art trip to MONA in Kearney and the Henri Museum in Cozad.
The CCAG project for the year will be a Mystery Painting.  Contact Cindi at cindiegging@daltontel.net if you would be interested in painting one section of the mystery painting.  It will be due for the Spring Show in March 2015.  Those already signed up for this project include Judy, Tish, Chuck, Pat A., Tess, Patsy, Darcy, Jack, Dakota, Ron, Margie, Cindi, and Margaret.

NOTE:  Mary Morrison can teach the Golden Paints Workshop in Sidney on Wednesday, October 22 or Saturday, October 25th.  All Golden Paints and Mediums used and taught in the workshop will be provided free of charge.  At the workshop I attended in 2013 we were even given samples to take home.  I learned a lot and gained enthusiasm to do much more with my paintings!  They now have Golden Watercolor paints as well as new, slow-drying acrylic paints. The workshop would be from 10 AM to 3 PM (4 PM at the very latest) with a half an hour for lunch.  The cost of the one-day workshop is $1,000, so we will need 12 to 15 people taking this workshop to make it more affordable per person.  Ten people would be $100 per person, 11 people would be $90.91 each, 12 people would be $83.33 per person, 13 people would be $76.92 each, 14 people would be $71.43 each, and 15 people would be $66.67 per person.  Please contact me at jimcartist@yahoo.com or call ne (Judy) at 308-249-1488 if you would like to take this workshop and which day would work better for you.  Please let me know as soon as possible so we'll know whether or not to make a definite reservation to have this workshop.

One of the Advantages of Taking a Workshop...

Yes, this is a little delayed getting posted because…I attended a workshop in New Mexico August through September 1st.  Looking forward to that upcoming workshop is great, isn't it?  You have great hopes and anticipations based on all the information you've collected about the workshop.  That's where I was a couple of weeks ago.

We packed up the fifth wheel and then it was off to the workshop with my traveling companions, my husband, and Molly--our black lab mix.  As we traveled to our destination near Ghost Ranch, the landscape views gradually sharpened my awareness.  The landscape dramatically changed and my interest and camera were on overload!  After a week of living in that landscape and viewing it from morning to sunset, I realize how refreshing and renewing an influence it had on my artistic-side.  These hills and rivers and sage and colors west of Abiquiu were spectacular and so inspiring.  I found myself reflecting on how fortunate it is to be able to travel just a few hours from home and be in such a different landscape in which to renew my inspiration as a painter?  Workshop or no workshop, that was wonderful!
Now, saying that, plein air painting in a new location, as all new learning can be at times, was frustrating.  I came home with not as many “good paintings” as I thought I should!  (Plein air painting in Abiquiu is up for another whole writing segment…much later!  Ha!)

It was definitely obvious that we were in “O’Keeffe Country.”  Out the front door of the RV was the magnificent black mountain “Pedernal”…O’Keeffe’s favorite mountain and reportedly where her ashes were spread.  I’m not really a big O’Keeffe fan, but the choices she made in her life intrigue me.  She chose to paint where she lived and what she knew.  It wasn’t an easy life; she didn’t have all of the conveniences of those living in metro areas at that time.  She couldn’t get fresh food; by the time food was brought to her house at Ghost Ranch, it was already starting to spoil.  Eventually, she bought property in Abiquiu with water rights and grew her own gardens; all so she could paint her beloved “melting mountains” and her collections of bones found in the area.  To me this just reemphasized my fondness for where I live--the farming landscape, my connection as the fourth generation to those who have gone before and my love of the sky and light in NE Colorado.  I can really relate to the choices O’Keeffe made.

These choices I call…tradeoffs—you give up some things to gain others!  So just look where you live with fresh eyes…one day a clerk in Denver mistook where I was from thinking it was in the mountains and said “Oh that’s such a beautiful drive!”  I replied, I completely agree with you; but my guess is we are not talking about the same location!  You just have to look with “new eyes” to be able to see!

I hope this Fall you get a chance to get away to an different view in order to appreciate what you have right in front of you the rest of the year!

It’s all about “Brush Mileage”….Nancy

Thursday Thoughts

A painting begins with a basic idea.  A series of lines take their place on a white canvas and paint is applied filling the blank whiteness.   Light is intensified by dark, the idea takes form and shape.

It's fascinating how an artist brain works to enable the transformation of thought energy into a tangible piece.  The art is an extension of the artist - the two forever joined through the link of mind and hand.  When you look at a piece of artwork you see the soul of the artist.

August Artist of the Month: Pat Meick

Cheyenne County Art Guild member Pat Meick of Gurley has been chosen Artist of the Month.  Meick’s favorite media is oil painting, but she is an accomplished award-winning artist creating artwork in various media.  She enjoys working in pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, pastels, and experimenting with any media. She has found it very interesting and challenging to find the technique and results of the different media.  Therefore, she has enjoyed taking many workshops and trying the warm, cool, lights, darks, blending, and mixing – all evolving to come together to make a picture of her own.

Meick has served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the CCAG as well as served on various guild committees throughout the years.  In addition she has benefited the Gurley community with her interest and skills as well as served on the Gurley Centennial Committee and instructed and encouraged the Girl Scouts from Gurley with their yearly special art project.

Her artwork has been on exhibit and won awards at various art shows including the Cheyenne County Fair, Holyoke, CO Art Show, Carnegie Art Center in Alliance, NE, the McCook Community College Show, McCook, NE, Scottsbluff Art Gallery, the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs Conference, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Art Competition, the Yuma Art Show, Yuma, CO, the CCAG Spring Art Show in Sidney, NE, and the Crane Trust Visitors & Nature Center, Alda, NE.

Pat Meick’s oil painting “Golden Grain and Cloudy Skies”, depicting wheat harvests remembered from 25 years of harvesting grains, is one of the first paintings she ever painted many years ago and is on display at the Sidney Public Library.  The public is encouraged to view this fine artwork.  In addition more of her fine paintings may be viewed at the Cheyenne County Community Center through September 8, 2014.

"Art-Mileage"

It's August already...What's your total "art-mileage" so far this Summer?

My summer is just flying by and before it vaporizes all together I'm going to take this opportunity to stop a few moments, literally...my grandboys are content and playing this moment...and think about what my intentions were for painting this summer.  What were yours?

We traveled to the mountains for our yearly family time the first of August and I did get the opportunity to paint one morning at Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) near Estes Park, CO for a couple of hours--thanks to an exploring son and reading husband!  Of course, it was beautiful, but having just one morning there felt like I had a ticking count-down clock right behind me.  I could just feel the apprehension building to the point when I would be jolted back to reality by that alarming bell and have to call it a day!  Do we ever get enough time to paint?  Never, I would say!

So the next logical question is how do I make more time for painting?  I have tried various ideas in answering this question throughout my life...some have worked better than others depending on my circumstances.  First, I never leave home without my "art bag."  Depending on where I'm going, the contents vary from a the simple art book or magazine of what I am currently reading, notebook and pen, to a mini-sized watercolor painting setup.  With this art bag, I have traveled to hundreds of baseball games (three boys explains it all), taken a few airplane rides, waited for a few appointments or people or rain delays, even driven a harvest grain cart, etc. all very contentedly with my art bag.  This art bag definitely does not make up for a few hours in RMNP, but looking back at all those "waiting" minutes, they have added up and have taken me further down the "art-mileage road" than without it.  So maybe, I'm doing OK...getting where I want to go.  What ideas have worked for you?

Ron Nordyke - July Artist of the Month

On display at the Sidney Public Library and the Cheyenne County Community Center until Aug 10th are paintings by Ron Nordyke of Chappell.  Some of the paintings at the Center are from a series of “hand, quilt and sky” pieces called the Time-Life Quilt series.  Each painting expresses a time of day which coincides with a time of life.  For example a 6:00 a.m. sky and the hand of a newborn on a baby blanket quilt.  A 9:00 p.m. sunset with the hand of a his 84 year old Mother-in-law on a “States Quilt” with her hand across the Nebraska block, a state where she was born and raised.  Her hand showing the signs of a life of endless working, cooking, loving, writing, washing, serving, dancing and somewhat reshaped by the presence of arthritis.  This series of paintings appear to be landscapes.

"Life's Little Ups and Downs"
As a small child all Nordyke dreamed of being was an artist.  After graduating with a BFA from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, Ron spent over twenty years in the upholstery business with his wife Dianne.   In 1992 he began a new career teaching Art for the Chappell Nebraska Public Schools giving him incentive and more time to paint.   Since then he has focused on painting many subjects, commissions, and murals mainly in acrylics.
Recognized regionally for his “Landscape Quilt” paintings Ron Nordyke is continually using the juxtaposition of objects and ideas to create visual metaphors in his works.   Whether he’s working with his art students on a community project, on a commission, or his own work,  he’s searching for “meaning”.   A love of art has kept him searching and creating with his hands since he was a small child.   His works don’t actually fit into any category. He enjoys the awesome beauty of a sky, a landscape, a face, or just something old, weathered, and worn.  In some ways they are a lot like the quilts he paints; a little piece of this and a scrap of that.  Just as quilts are laid out in patterns of simple repeating shapes, his art has some of these themes that reoccur regularly,… and life is a lot like that.  Looking for ways to visually express the overlapping of the “natural” God-created world and the “man-made world” fuels his artistic fire.
Like a composer of music he’s looking for that “hook” that will cause you to look and think deeper.  In his own words, “I like to think I’m portraying our common  heritage by way of visual images.”  Many of these ideals are universal: the value of  hard work and fine craft; the virtue and strength of character that comes from age; the freedom and energy of youth; the awesome regenerating power of faith; the magnificent beauty and diversity of creation; even the thoughts and emotions linked to images from our collective past.  He uses common ordinary objects and presents them in thought provoking compositions creating visual metaphors.  In addition to Ron Nordyke's display of artwork at the Sidney Public Library and the Cheyenne County Community Center more of his artwork can be viewed at rnordyke.com.

May Artist of the Month: Ben Darling

A Sidney resident since 1997, Mr. Darling is the middle school and upper elementary art teacher for Sidney Public Schools. Darling also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Sidney Campus of WNCC, offering courses in painting and drawing. He has had numerous residencies with the Nebraska Arts Council Artist in the Schools and Communities program and toured shows with the Nebraska Touring Program. In 2004 he received a Masters Degree in Education from UNK.

Darling is known for his landscape paintings which can be found in many private and public collections.  The appeal of the changing light and interaction between the weather and the land keeps him out and looking for subject matter.  Ninety percent of the time his work is started on location.  Sketched in with oil paint on canvas, the paintings are then completed in the studio.  His recent drawings are of local wild flowers, generally started from life and finished in pastel and colored pencil.  He also does theatrical painting for Way Out West, and has helped with the High School musicals and one act plays as a scenic artist.

With some of his spare time he makes hand built pottery, most often using the coil and paddle method.  Darling also enjoys bicycling, backpacking, hiking and gardening.

Darling's work will be on display at the CCCC and the Sidney Public Library through June 9, 2014.  The public is encouraged to view his fine artworks!

Pat Albers: June Artist of the Month

The Cheyenne County Art Guild has selected Pat Albers as the June Artist of the Month.  Albers has fun doing art and creates artworks just for the pure joy of it.  She did a little art while in high school several years ago and didn't do much with her creativity until after her husband passed away six years ago.  Since then she is enjoying painting whatever catches her eye.  When asked what her favorite subject matter was, she stated, " Whatever comes to mind."  She has painted on paper and canvas but doesn't let a stray piece of burlap or slate go to waste either.  "When something sparks my imagination," she said, "I go with it!"
Alber's favorite media are acrylic paints and oil pastels.  Her creative artworks of landscapes, flowers, etc. are happily shared and given away to family and friends  One of her artworks won a First Place Award at the CCAG Spring Art Show in April and was one of over 350 artworks in the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs Annual Conference June 11-14, 2014, in McCook, NE.
After moving to Sidney from Council Bluffs, IA, Albers has enjoyed the exchange of art ideas and fun with other artists of the Cheyenne County Art Guild of which she is a member.  She also works at the Fort Sidney Museum during the summertime where she paints original postcards in her spare time.

Pat Albers' acrylic painting titled "A Walk with Jesus" is on display now through July 13, 2014 at the Sidney Public Library.  Twelve other artworks of Albers are on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view these creative and joyful artworks.

Amaryllis - Belladona
Most often working in colored pencil, Darling once mentioned that she enjoys drawing the unique and interesting things that people ofter overlook or take for granted - "The things in the nooks and crannies of places -- the backyard, nature, etc."  Her expertly rendered stalks of rhubarb drawing (and many other drawings) attest to this and end in an artwork that opens people's eyes to the beauty around them.

Her most recent work on display at the Sidney Public Library is a colored pencil exploration of antique paper and the flower "Amaryllis Belladonna."  Ann Darling has twelve other artworks on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center in Sidney through February 10th.  The public is encouraged to see these fine examples of Darling's talent and expertise.
