I never thought I would be a member of the Widow's Club.

These past several months have been very stressful.  On January 17, 2025, Gary had a stroke which was resolved by the time he was airlifted to Swedish Hospital.  Then on May 13, 2025 I came home from school and found him in the floor - another stroke.  He was airlifted to Swedish Hospital but this time, the brain damage was massive.  His children, Nathan and Jessica, were there with him to say good-bye.  Pastor Carlson gave him last rights.  I was with him as he breathed his last breath at 11:50 May 19, 2025.

Family and friends gathered for his funeral on May 27, 2025.

Life goes on, I'm finding my new normal.

Happy New Year!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!  We had a super fun gathering (and fabulous food!!) in December and enjoyed viewing past and present art and sharing how we have matured as artists!
It’s time to begin the second half of our year in Art Guild and we have an awesome agenda for you for the next five months!!!!  This will be the perfect opportunity to bring people you know who want to learn more about a specific medium!  Four of our members have graciously agreed to teach us about a medium that they are familiar using.  They will each be in charge of a mini workshop and then will hold a weekend workshop in that media!!  What a gift to be given by our talented members!!

So… on January 11th at the Presbyterian Church fellowship hall  from 5:30-6:30 we will begin our exploration of watercolor, pastel, oil, and acrylics by learning more about what is needed to set oneself up to work in each media with a mini-workshop entitled:  “Where Do I Begin…and With What?!”  **Each of the members who is presenting a workshop later will bring information for us about paper, canvas, paint, pastels, brushes, easels, how to protect oneself from toxins, cost of materials,  preserving, framing, etc., etc., etc.**  Questions are encouraged!  Of course, we will also be adding our own combined knowledge to the mini-workshop because that’s how we learn and  become well-informed about  what it takes to begin to work in that art form!

Then…on February 8th, Tish Treinen will begin with techniques in watercolor.  She will follow up the mini-workshop with a tentative Saturday workshop on February 13th from 9:00-Noon and 1:30-3:00.r
And…on March 14th, Jane Easterly will present some techniques in the field of pastel.  She will do a follow-up workshop on Saturday March 19th from 9:00-Noon and 1:30-3:00.
Before we know it…on April 11th, Chuck Borcher will teach us about some oil strategies.
And finally…on May 9th, Ron Nordyke will lead us in a better understanding of the multifaceted art of acrylics
So…SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!

This month, we will have a meeting at 7:00 and discuss any pertinent matters.

DON’T FORGET TO PAY YOUR DUES to Margie Surber THIS MONTH!!    $20 for the year.  Her address is 2658 Alvarado in Sidney, 69162.
Tentative dates for the Spring Show are somewhere within the dates of April 1st - 10th. More exact details to follow!!  But GET BUSY CREATING for the show!!!

HOSTESSES/REFRESHMENTS:  Tish Treinen and Jane Easterly

Hope to see you at the meeting!!  (Please come in the west door at the church on 14th and Linden.)

Artfully yours,
Cindi Egging

CCAG Historian Passing on the Torch..........

Cheyenne County Art Guild,
A note to say I am resigning from the wonderful job of being historian for the “Art Guild”. The plan is to bring all the scrapbooks and photo albums to the spring show for display for all to enjoy. I cannot consider taking any of it home for another year. This spring I will be 85 years and someone will enjoy having this historian job for the CCAG. This has been a fun job and I will pass it on to another person.
                                                Sincerely,
                                                Hank Jessen

Pamela Brown: February Artist of the Month

The Cheyenne County Art Guild selected Pamela Brown as February Artist of the Month.  Brown is a CCAG member haling from Akron, Colorado.  Washington County, Colorado, has been her home for over thirty-five years.  She works primarily in watercolor and is best known for her soft and subtle paintings depicting the people and landscape of the high plains in eastern Colorado.  Her work brings life and beauty to an area often thought of as barren and desolate.

Brown and her late husband lived on the plains thirty-four miles southwest of Akron for twenty-eight years where they raised their five children.  She continued to paint and enter shows during this time.  In 2001 she opened Sand Creek Studio in Akron; a working studio and a gallery for her work.  In 2005 she remarried and moved to town where she continues to paint, enter shows, and occasionally teaches art classes.  Her husband builds custom frames and does all of the framing for her work.

Public commissioned paintings by Pamela Brown include the National Radial Engine Exhibition in Akron, CO--2004 through 2011, the 100 Year Old Washington County Courthouse in 2009, and a Commemorative Envelope for the Akron Post Office in 2007.  She has painted numerous private commissioned artworks, too.

Her award-winning artworks have been exhibited at the Western & Wildlife Show at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, the Western Spirit Show in Cheyenne, Wyo., the American Plains Artists Show in Texas, the New Mexico Small Paintings Show, the Catherine Lorillard Wolf Art Club's exhibition in New York City, NY, a Featured Artist show at the Korshare Indian Museum in La Junta, CO, as well as at the CCAG's Spring Members' Show in Sidney, NE.

Pamela Brown's limited edition print of a watercolor titled "Pink Cactus" is on display now through Sunday, March 8th at the Sidney Public Library.  Twelve other artworks of Brown's are displayed at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view all of these fine artworks by this artist who has been called the "Chronicler of the High Plains."  As Brown once said, "People think of the mountains in the western half of Colorado, but there is the other half of Colorado and it's beautiful, too!"

Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance is getting ready for its 22nd Anniversary Show March 24-April 25.  Entry date is February 20, 2015.  Copies of the brochure are available.

I offered a ornament painting class at the Art at Lodgepole Creek Gallery on Saturday, December 13th.  Ten children participated.  It was pretty fun!  Janell Wicht had a card-making class at the same time and had a few participants.  Margaret Evans brought some photos down to display during the day.  I am planning a try a Tot-Art class (24-36 mo. with an adult) for Wednesday mornings and a class after school for elementary age students (not sure of these details yet).

Thanks go out to Nancy Dee for giving us a great workshop about pastel!!  We learned a lot about applying pastel, papers, and drew (painted) some pretty awesome green apples!!

JANUARY Mini-workshop:  Cindi Egging, yours truly, will give you some information on still-life art (history, things to consider when setting up a still-life, materials, and art elements and principles to pay attention to) and she will prepare a still-life for us to work from with a spotlight to help us see the values.  Please bring any drawing supplies you have:  pencils, erasers, colored pencils, charcoal sticks, and paper.  I have enjoyed reading several articles in art magazines while preparing for this workshop and have learned a lot!  Judy’s first mini-workshop addressed the “draw what you see” concept which is very important when doing still-life.  It’s a great way to improve skills as you really look at the items before you.

In December, 8 or 9 of us painted Christmas ornaments which were delivered to Sloan Estates, Golden Living Center, and Sidney Regional Extended Care.  They were received with gratitude—some were adding trees and were very glad to have some new ornaments to hang on them.

Judy McElroy: Artist of the Month (Dec. - Jan.)

CHEYENNE COUNTY ART GUILD SELECTS J. I. MC ELROY AS ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Born and raised on Nebraska cattle ranches, J. I. McElroy has a great love and respect for nature, wide-open spaces, and the natural interplay between the land & its inhabitants.  These are depicted almost exclusively in her artwork, which is accomplished in a realistic style.

What makes her paint or draw a particular subject can vary.  Sometimes she is so awed with a scene or its colors that she tries to preserve it on paper or canvas and share that scene with anyone who might have missed it!  Other times she is so delighted with all the lights and darks, smooth and rough textures, and so forth, that she is compelled to see if her eyes can see it all and if her hands can record it.  "Sometimes," McElroy said, "I simply try to pass on the humor, wholesomeness, and wonder of people, animals, and events that I am encountering on life’s highways.  What a joy!"

Another joyful experience to her through art is being a member of the Cheyenne Co. Art Guild, the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, the Ogallala Art Society, and the American Plains Artists.  She said that she is thankful for the many friendships and learning opportunities that she is enjoying through her association with these great organizations, the people in them, and through art in general.

McElroy's favorite medias are watercolor, acrylic, and graphite pencil & charcoal.  "Usually the scene I see, the humidity in the air or lack thereof, the sun’s position in the sky, or the mood of the scene will tell me which media I want to use to try to take that real-life scene and put it down on a two-dimensional surface," she said.  Sometimes after working with color for quite a while she thinks it is just a wonderful vacation as well as a challenge to work in black and white again with graphite pencils and charcoal.  She likes the challenges presented by each media.

Challenges are one of the many things she likes about art.  For McElroy the first challenge presented is being brave enough to put that first stroke of pencil or paint onto the new blank sheet of paper or canvas.  The next major challenge is to keep going with a painting or drawing when she hits a halfway point in its progress where things are developing, but still not very pretty—when she wonders whether to keep painting or throw it away and start over.  And the final challenge for her is to know when the painting is done--when that final little touch-up is the last one the painting needs.  The whole process is a challenge to her, and yet one she considers to be so educational and so much fun while seeing how the artwork develops.  "If in the end I like it, then that is good," McElroy stated, "and if someone else likes the artwork and it gives him or her pleasure to look at it, then that is extra special!

Her artwork and/or prints or cards may be seen at Sidney Feed, Sidney; soon at Art at Lodgepole Creek; Price Gallery & Framing, Valentine, NE; her studio-gallery, The Bunkhouse, southeast of Gurley; and in public and private collections internationally.  Upcoming shows and exhibits in 2015 include the CCAG Spring Art Show in March, Sidney; Ogallala Art Society Show in April at the Meadowlark Gallery in Grant, NE and at the Petrified Wood Gallery in September in Ogallala; the American Plains Artists 30th Annual Juried Show, August-October, at the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, NE; a Featured Artist Show at the Most Unlikely Place in Lewellen in October; and the 2Shot Goose Hunt Art Show in December in Torrington, WY.

McElroy's artwork has won many awards at various times including Best of Show and People’s Choice at the Cheyenne County Art Guild’s Spring Show; the Third Place Award, Award of Excellence, and the Purchase Award at the international American Plains Artists Juried Exhibit & Sale in Midland, TX and Lincoln, NE; many First, Second, and Third Place awards at the Holyoke Art Show, Cheyenne County Fair, Wray Art Show and Yuma, Colorado Art Show, and several others.  The best award to her is when someone likes and connects with her artwork!

A signed and numbered 15" x 30" print of "Camouflaged but Uneasy" (a herd of ten pronghorns) will be on display at the Sidney Public Library through January 11, 2015.  Twelve other artworks by J. I. McElroy will be on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view these fine artworks.

Patsy Yager - November Artist of the Month

Patsy Yager is a Head Start teacher with a MAED degree (Master of Arts in Elementary Education).  While she has had very little formal training in art, she has always had a love of art and a desire to create art.  In 1998 Yager took a few oil painting lessons from Trish Corder at the Hardy, Arkansas, Spring River Art Gallery.  From these she learned a few of the basics of painting with oils. After moving to Sidney, Nebraska, she enrolled at WNCC for some early childhood classes.  As an elective she took beginning drawing.  In 2013 Yager joined the Cheyenne County Art Guild and has had the pleasure of attending a few art workshops sponsored by the guild.  Recently she began taking painting classes with Mark Leach, a Bob Ross certified instructor.  Yager stated, "I find the different styles of art fascinating."  And after attending a watercolor workshop sponsored by the CCAG she is looking forward to trying her hand with watercolors.
Yaker's favorite subject matter is landscapes.  She also likes to paint animals, pets, and family members.  Her "Spring River" painting is on display now through December 14th at the Sidney Public Library.  Other paintings and photography by Patsy Yager are on display at the Cheyenne County Community Center.  The public is encouraged to view this first ever exhibit of Yager's very fine artworks!

OCTOBER ARTIST OF THE MONTH: NANCY DEE

Nancy L. Biesemeier Dee is a fourth generation resident of the rural plains of Northeastern Colorado.  As a lifelong painter, she especially remembers two elementary teachers that encouraged her interest in art.  After receiving her college degree in Business Education and a masters in Computer Education, Dee continued to pursue her art interests while teaching and raising three sons.  For many years, she painted when her schedule allowed and was able to study under several nationally-known watercolorists.  Over the years she has won several local art awards for her watercolor paintings and developed a strong interest in pastel painting.

One of her watercolor paintings won an Award of Excellence at the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) conference in June and is currently in the ANAC Traveling Show which is comprised of the top twenty-six artworks from that conference.  Later in the summer one of her pastel paintings received a 2nd Place Award in the 10th Annual Mile High International Pastel Exhibition that was held at the Denver Public Library in Denver, CO.  Her artwork was also chosen by the Denver Public Library's graphic designer to be one of four displayed on the "poster" for the event.

Strong parts of Dee's award winning paintings are color relationships and rural subjects.  She loves to capture things in the rich saturated colors and vibrant light of Northeast Colorado where she and her husband live on their farm south of Paoli.  In addition to painting and supporting the local arts, she shares her love of watercolor and pastel through teaching.  Remembering how she started in college when she attended a local artist's workshop in watercolor painting and got "hooked" on painting, Dee enjoys sharing her knowledge.
Dee is a member of the Cheyenne County, Ogallala, Wray and Yuma art guilds, as well as the Colorado Watercolor Society, Pastel Society of Colorado, and the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs.

Nancy Dee's award-winning watercolor painting titled "Yavatai Yucca" has been on display at the Sidney Public Library and twelve other artworks at the Cheyenne County Community Center since October 13th.  The public is encouraged to view these fine artworks.  Other artworks of Dee's can be viewed at  www.frenchmancreek.com.

Message from CCAG President, Cindi Egging:

GREETINGS to all current CCAG members!  I am pleased to serve as your president for the 20`14-2015 year.  I want to send out the agenda through email before every meeting so that items can be added prior to the meeting and maybe save some time during our business meeting.  I will also try to send them out early enough that I can also contact those who do not have email, too!  THANKS to Ron Nordyke (vice president), Judy McElroy (secretary), Margie Surber (treasurer) for filling out the Officers' terms for this year.

OF NOTE:  We will again be having our MINI-WORKSHOPS, taught by members of the club.  Anyone is invited to attend and learn new techniques in many different mediums.  Invite friends and co-workers, neighbors and family members!!  The building will be open by 4:30 for those of you who want to come early and draw or paint for awhile with a group.  The workshop will begin at 5:15 so that if you work you will have time to come and join us.  The workshops are casual and go until 6:30ish, so please come as soon as you are able.  These little workshops were planned last year in hopes that most people would come and the meetings could get out earlier, but since everyone can't come, we have decided to add a short PROGRAM by the same artist, corresponding to the workshop theme, after the business meeting.

OCTOBER Mini-workshop:  Drawing by Judy McElroy at 4:30 in the Shelter House at Legion Park.  Judy will be giving instruction about drawing what you see suited to the beginner or the seasoned artist.  Bring any pencils you have, as well as erasers, sketch book, etc...

CCAG September Artist of the Month: Ethan Nelson

Ethan Nelson, a senior in high school who is attending dual credit classes at Western Nebraska Community College, is the Cheyenne County Art Guild "Artist of the Month" for September.

Nelson began his career of drawing and painting at an early age. One of his earliest artistic accomplishments is the Nebraska Fence Post Christmas Art Contest in 2002 where, at age 5, he won his first award.
Nelson joined the Cheyenne County Art Guild at age 10 in 2007 with the thought of improving his art techniques and learning about the business of marketing visual art. That same year, he and his older brother, Jake, founded their own business and launched Nelsonart, which specializes in original art notecards and limited edition prints. In 2012, Nelson signed his first book contract to illustrate "Bless Your Hearts, The North Platte Canteen" by author and historian, Charlotte Endorf.
Nelson's most recent art awards for 2013-2014 include: Cheyenne County Art Guild Best of Show, Association of Nebraska Art Clubs Certificate of Excellence, Image Art Show Best of Show – youth division, Hixson-Lied Young Artist Award, Cheyenne County Fair Grand Champion and the Congressional Art Contest, second place with artwork on display in Congressman Adrian Smith's Washington office. Nelson also has had artwork accepted for the Western Nebraska Community College 2014 "Emerging Voices" publication.

His artwork is on display this month at the Cheyenne County Rec Center and the Sidney Public Library.

To see more about Ethan, check out his Facebook page:  Nelsonart
